Medical Genetics

Genetics play a vital role in the physical constitution in a baby. Wrong physical constitution can cause serious health problems and disorders like birth defects, mental retardation, cleft lip and palate, developmental impairment, and metabolic and neurological disorders, etc. The Genetic division at Aster MIMS conducts studies on and provides treatments for genetic disorders in children such as birth defects, genetic syndromes, and chromosomal abnormalities.

Genetic medicine is responsible for identifying various diseases parents can pass on to their children. The research department at the division is guided by a team of doctors who are constantly making breakthroughs in understanding the underlying issues of various genetic problems and providing unique therapeutic care to children suffering from genetic conditions. Our Geneticists come from various medical specialties; hence they can recognize various inborn errors related to metabolism, thereby enabling better treatment and care.

The department facilitates state-of-the-art technologies for prenatal testing that help us discover abnormalities in a baby and provide treatment for the same. There are certain genetic conditions that cannot be treated, and for such patients and their parents, expert counseling is provided so they have a better prognosis and improved quality of life. Apart from providing expert diagnosis for patients from hereditary disorders, the department also offers services like genetic counseling, diagnosing metabolic disorders that lead to hereditary disorder, understanding unique heritable risk factors that might lead to cancer, obesity, diabetes, arthrosclerosis and so on.
